Situation in Turkey's Nuclear Power Plant Project

At Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant, Turkey's first nuclear power plant, the foundation for the first unit was laid in 2018, the foundation for the second and third units was laid in 2020, and the foundation for the fourth and last unit was laid in 2021.

Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NGS), which employs approximately 20 thousand people, stands out as one of the largest NPP construction sites in the world. The first unit of the power plant, which will consist of four units, each with a 1200 megawatt VVER-1200 type third generation reactor and will have a total installed power of 4,800 megawatts, is aimed to be commissioned in 2023, when the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Turkey will be celebrated. The remaining 3 units are planned to be operational by the end of 2026, one year apart. It is predicted that the power plant, which will produce approximately 35 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually when full capacity is activated, will meet 10 percent of Turkey's electricity demand alone. It is calculated that Akkuyu NPP, which will be able to produce uninterrupted electricity with zero emissions, without emitting harmful greenhouse gases to the environment, will prevent the emission of 35 million tons of carbon dioxide annually.
Akkuyu NPP, whose employment rate varies according to the project stages, is expected to provide employment for 4 thousand people during the operation period. The operational life of the power plant, which is planned to be 60 years, has the opportunity to be extended for another 20 years.
