A Remarkable Housing Project with a Stone and Perforated Brick Shell

The housing project, designed by PMA Madhushala in Maval, India, draws attention with its outer shell made of perforated brick and stone.
“For generations, homeowners who have lived in a traditional home have become accustomed to a protected shell, interior courtyards, large exterior open spaces and a farming lifestyle. Accordingly, they wanted an architectural design that would create an identity for their family.”
PMA Madhushala
Different spatial experiences were created for the residents by reinterpreting the local house plan typology specific to the region. While planning the house, which was arranged in a cross plan, the corners were left open, allowing air to enter through the perforated outer shell. Access to the house within the outer shell is via a bridge from a paved garden area. The pool, living and dining areas on the ground floor of the residence have the closest connection to the courtyard. There are various openings and balconies on the upper floor. In addition, the bedrooms are designed to face the courtyards.
There is a curved staircase rising from the middle of the house. The staircase, with rips of varying sizes, is finished with a pale blue plaster, creating a common space around a small courtyard.
Large volumes protruding from the exterior walls of the residence are used as closed balconies in the bedrooms. Lime plaster-clad concrete walls are used against the traditional carved wooden partitions surrounding the upper balconies to blend modern and traditional designs.
