The museum, where Alvar Aalto's architectural and design works will be exhibited, was designed by A-Konsultit Architects.
The museum consists of three buildings: the renovated Alvar Aalto Museum, the Museum of Central Finland, and the new Aalto2 Centre, which will open this year. It aims to open its doors after structural repairs in the existing Alvar Aalto Museum and revisions of the facilities that will serve its concept in the new Aalto2 museum. The design of Aalto2 is based on an international competition held in 2015 with close to 700 entries worldwide.
The museum aims to combine art and science in the context of architecture, culture, and design. Aalto2 presents a new calendar for events and places various exhibitions in the city center. Curated by the Finnish-Spanish architect's Anna and Eugeni Bach', they will exhibit the "Human Traces - World Heritage" selection at the opening exhibition of the museum. In addition, five mini-exhibitions will highlight the diversity of heritage and cultural significance at the Aalto2 museum.
Aalto2, which was built in addition to the existing museum, increases the museum's accessibility with its bright and spacious structure and expands the opportunities for cooperation. With its museum shop and cafe, Aalto2 makes it easy for museum visitors to discover many exhibitions.
The most permanent exhibition of the museum is “AALTO – Work and Life”. The designs of Aalto and the concepts that guide his designs are included in the exhibition. The exhibition conveys information about Alvar Aalto's life and designs to its audience. Architect and designer Aalto, who lived between 1898 and 1976, believed that an architect's responsibility was to serve the underprivileged. He thought that good design and architecture could help solve problems in human life.
