General practitioners, who went on strike for 72 hours on 13 March 2023 in England, went on strike again on 11 April 2023, as the conflict continued. The general practitioners' strike in the country will last for 4 days and will end on the morning of April 15, 2023.
Practitioners have argued that salary increases have been below inflation for years and are calling for a 35 percent pay increase this year. General practitioners in the country, which number in the tens of thousands, also demand improvements in working conditions.
The British government, on the other hand, came to the table with a 3.5 percent raise proposal for general practitioners, as well as for nurses, physiotherapists, and ambulance workers.
Support and participation in the strike in the country are expected to be high. Nearly 80 percent of the doctors voted in the strike vote, and 98 percent said 'Yes' to the strike.
The National Health Service (NHS National Health Service) announced that more than 350,000 appointments and surgeries are expected to be canceled due to the strike.
British Health Minister Steve Barclay, in a written statement regarding the GPs' work stoppage, said that the strike not only puts patient safety at risk but the timing is aimed to create the highest level of disruption by coinciding with the Easter holiday. Barclay also described the strike as a huge disappointment and said the demand for a 35 percent wage increase was unreasonable.
Barclay made an offer to the British Medical Association (BMA_British Medical Association) to hold confidential talks, as they did with other unions.
Railway, metro, port, health, and airport workers and teachers, who say that real wages in England have been declining for years, go on strike frequently.
