Approval of Draft Law on Facial Recognition Technology from France

To increase security measures, the French Senate has approved a bill that allows access to a person's identity information using artificial intelligence-assisted facial recognition technology in public places. This bill allows the use of biometric technology to recognize people's faces and determine their identities through this information. The use of the technology is specifically targeted as part of security measures ahead of the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympic Games. By means of cameras, it will be possible to determine whether the suspects were present at the crime scene or whether they were involved in any crime by passing the identity scans of the suspects remotely.

The bill was passed in the Senate by a vote of 117 to 226. However, there are serious concerns regarding the use of this technology. Human rights defenders say the bill has the potential to violate individual freedoms. There are also concerns that this technology, if enacted, could lead to discrimination based on gender and ethnicity. Besides that, the French Senate is also discussing another bill called the "Law of Justice". This law allows suspects to secretly access their digital devices remotely. One article of this bill was adopted on 8 June, enabling microphones and cameras to be activated to record audio and video recordings from phones, computers, and tablets of suspects in cases such as terrorism and organized crime, and to monitor their location. These two bills expand the power of both government and security forces to interfere with the public's privacy rights. Human rights defenders and other critics have warned of the potential for abuse of such powers. However, the government argues that these technologies will be an important tool in solving crimes and protecting against terrorist threats.
