 Rolls-Royce Successfully Completes Ultrafan Tests

Rolls-Royce has completed the first trials of UltraFan technology at its factory in Derby, England.

Rolls-Royce has successfully completed the first trials of UltraFan technology at its factory in Derby, England. Initial tests were conducted with zero Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Rolls-Royce's historic testing allowed the company to test an entirely new engine architecture for the first time in 54 years. These tests also show how well the industry is working with governments. The technology package used in the tests is an important step in increasing the efficiency of aircraft engines. UltraFan improves performance compared to Trent XWB. Customers will soon be offered opportunities for greater usability, reliability, and efficiency as technology is transferred from the UltraFan program to Trent engines. UltraFan's scalable technology with approximately 25,000 to 110,000 pounds of thrust is expected to be available in the 2030s. This technology has the potential to be used in new narrow-body and wide-body aircraft.
Tufan Erginbilgic, CEO of Rolls-Royce, said: “The UltraFan has game-changing features in aviation. The technologies we test in this program can be used to improve the engines of the future as they are today. Here we witness history being made and an important milestone in improving engine efficiency. Alongside sustainable aviation fuels, more efficient gas turbine engines will play an important role in helping the industry meet its 2050 carbon reduction targets. Today we are even closer to this goal. Collaboration is of great importance in reducing industrial carbon dioxide emissions. Our UltraFan program is a shining example of what can be achieved when government and industry come together for a common cause.
