The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released passenger data for May 2022 indicating that the increase in air travel is accelerating as the busy Northern Hemisphere summer travel season. According to this statement, total traffic in May 2022 increased by 83.1 percent compared to May 2021, mainly due to the high recovery in international traffic. In the statement, it was stated that global traffic is currently at 68.7 percent of pre-crisis levels. According to IATA data, in May 2022, domestic traffic increased by 0.2 percent compared to the previous year.
Critical improvements in many markets were masked by the 73.2% year-on-year decline in the Chinese domestic market due to Covid-19 related restrictions. In May 2022, domestic traffic was recorded as 76.7 percent of May 2019. International traffic increased by 325.8 percent. International traffic, on the other hand, increased by a record 325.8 percent compared to May 2021. According to the association, reducing travel restrictions in many parts of Asia is accelerating the improvement of international travel. May 2022 international traffic demand allowed it to reach 64.1 percent of May 2019 levels.
