At a global press conference held in Geneva, Sonia Ben Hamida, the manager of IATA Special Cargoes, made statements on the issue. Hamida said the following in her presentation on perishable products and air cargo logistics:’’ About one-third of the food produced globally is wasted in consumption, distribution, transportation and storage processes. According to the statements made by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), this waste of products with the ability to deteriorate quickly is almost 400 billion dollars each year. The rate of almost half of the product between the manufacturer and the market is experienced due to the temperature changes encountered during the transition process. Unfortunately, the most affected countries are developing countries. Because in developing countries, the problem of food loss is exacerbated by inadequate infrastructure and low investment in food production processes. All these problems can be improved with government interventions, special projects and initiatives that will eliminate the root causes of the losses’’.
In her presentation, Sonia Ben Hamida also mentioned the data obtained from the market researches carried out until that time and emphasized that the global food logistics market is predicted to rise to an average of 162 billion dollars by 2024. Continuing her words, Hamida said:’’ In order to meet the consumption needs of the world, products travel between continents due to a detailed supply chain. These include products such as meat, fish and flowers. These products, which are suitable for deterioration, should be transported to the addresses as fast as possible, as well as reliable. At this point, the logistics activities of perishable products are possible with air transportation. This can be justified at the cost of products’’.
