Mysterious Göbeklitepe Undamaged in the Earthquake
Göbeklitepe, which is the oldest settlement in the world and also on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List with its 12 thousand-year history, became one of the important historical structures that survived two major earthquakes. The historical building, which survived both earthquakes without any damage, was viewed from the air.
Göbeklitepe, which is 12 thousand years old, which is called the zero point of history and is on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Permanent List, became one of the important historical structures that managed to survive after two major earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.7 and 7.6 in Kahramanmaraş. It was revealed that the historical building, located in the Örencik District of Haliliye district, was not damaged after the earthquakes, both with the aerial drone and the examination of the expert teams.
Şanlıurfa Provincial Culture and Tourism Director Aydın Aslan said, “Göbeklitepe was not damaged in any way from these earthquakes. As you know, Göbeklitepe was included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Permanent List in 2018. Göbeklitepe has become a tourism locomotive not only for Şanlıurfa but also for the region since 2019. In 2019, we had about 412 thousand visitors. In particular, Göbeklitepe, last year, this number managed to exceed 850 thousand in 2022. Before the earthquakes this year, we expected to be able to exceed the 1 million figure.
Of course, we will observe these figures in the coming periods. Of course, after bandaging our wounds. We went down to the field immediately after the earthquakes and worked on historical sites, especially in Göbekli Tepe. We carried out studies to detect structural damage. This is how what we saw in Göbeklitepe entered our first report. In our first examination, it was not damaged structurally or physically at any time. Is there an angular shift in T-shaped stones? so we wanted to analyze it technically and observed that it did not change in any way, but continued in the same way. I can easily say that Göbeklitepe was in the same state after the earthquake as it was before the earthquake, nothing has changed," he said.
