The Historic Week for Turkish Sports
Turkish sports experienced a historic week with European and world championships in many branches.
In the week when the 19 May Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day was celebrated, Turkey achieved great success from basketball to volleyball, from boxing to taekwondo, rowing to amputee football.
Anadolu Efes delighted the Turkish people in the THY Europa League, Europe's most important club-based organization in basketball. In the Final Four organization held in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, on May 19- 21, the navy-whites won the European championship for the second time in a row, first passing the Greek team Olympiakos and then the Spanish team Real Madrid in the final. Europe's most prestigious trophy in basketball came to Turkey for the third time.
VakıfBank Women's Volleyball Team made history once again in the CEV Champions League. Defeating Italy's Imoco Volley team with the 3- 1 score in the CEV Champions League Super Final held in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, the yellow-black team succeeded in bringing Europe's biggest club-level trophy to its museum for the 5th time in this branch. VakıfBank reached the top in 2022 after 2011, 2013, 2017, and 2018, and Turkish teams won the championship cup in 7 of the last 11 seasons in this organization.
National women boxers reached world championship in the past week. At the World Women's Boxing Championship held in Istanbul, national athletes made history with five gold and two bronze medals. With these medals, the National Women’s Boxing Team became the world champion. Ayşe Çağırır, Buse Naz Çakıroğlu, Busenaz Sürmeneli, Hatice Akbaş and Şennur Demir won gold medals and Sema Çalışkan and Elif Güneri won bronze medals and they all successfully represented Turkey in the world arena.
Turkey became the European champion in the European Taekwondo and Para Taekwondo Championships held in England. National taekwondo players reached the top of Europe as a team with a total of 11 medals, including 5 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze medals, in the organization in Manchester, and national para taekwondo players with a total of 8 medals, including 4 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze medals. Merve Dinçel, Zeliha Ağrıs, Hatice Kübra İlgün, Hakan Reçber, Emre Kutalmış Ateşli took the podium as gold medalists, Emine Gögebakan and Görkem Polat as silver medalists, Nafia Kuş, Deniz Dağdelen, Muhammed Emin Yıldız and Enbiya Taha Biçer as bronze medalists. In Para Taekwondo Championship, Nurcihan Ekinci, Gamze Gürdal, Alican Özcan, Mahmut Bozteke won gold medals, Meryem Betül Çavdar, Seçil Er and Mehmet Sami Saraç won silver medals and Oktay Atalay won a bronze medal and they made Turkey happy.
