Director Sidar Inan Ercelik Met with Students

A special program was organized at Istanbul Gelisim University Gelisim Vocational School, open to everyone. Head of the Department of Visual, Audio-Visual Techniques and Media Production Lecturer. Assist. Neslihan Kültür, a conversation on 'Cinema-Documentary' was held on Friday, October 26th.

In the interview, which will shed light on the professional life of students who love art; many topics from cinema to theater were discussed. Director Sidar İnan Erçelik, who started his professional life with theater experience, came together with the students of the Department of Communication. In 2010, Erçelik, who started his career in cinema, also told the shooting story of the documentaries and short films he gave life to. The successful director, who has received many awards at national and international film festivals, shared his beautiful and challenging experiences with the future director candidates. Referring to the difficulties he experienced during the shooting of the documentary 'Derman', which he directed, Erçelik said, "I was only able to complete the shooting of the documentary, which started in 2012 in Mardin's Nusaybin district, after a difficult 2-year process. The cinema industry is difficult and requires a long devotion. This profession will always ask you to produce, which will lead you to success." Erçelik also answered the questions of the students.

Student: As cinema students, we don't know where to start. What is your breaking point?
The breaking point may differ for everyone. I was a theater student and in 2010 I quit theater and switched to the film industry. I shot my short film Black Partridge with a second-hand camera. And I participated in the Cannes Film Festival with that film. I learned everything by experiencing for the first time in my life. My first short film, my festival experience, my first documentary...  You need to be hungry to receive, not to give, if you are eager to show, you will lose. Tolstoy has a saying: "Great works emerge in two ways, either the character goes on a journey or he becomes a stranger in the city." We are strangers in the city, so people will have a lot to tell us. Listen to everyone's story...

Student: What kind of difficulties did you face during documentary filming? Were there moments when you wanted to give up?
I've been through tough times in the industry. You will all go through this path. This road is difficult and complicated, if we are in this department; we need to be resilient, determined and hardworking.

Student: What are your recommendations for us?
Meet people and listen to their stories. If you are going to make a documentary, there should be only one character in your center (like Halil in the Derman documentary). Without Halil, there would have been no Derman. Nothing happens without trying, shoot a lot. We have embarked on a long journey and we need to fight our way...

Communication students showed great interest in the interview, which lasted about 2 hours. At the end of the interview, the Head of the Department of Visual, Audio-Visual Techniques and Media Production, Lecturer. Gör. Neslihan Kültür thanked Sidar İnan Erçelik for his valuable participation. The event ended after a souvenir photo was taken.
