42ND ISTANBUL FILM FESTIVAL TOOK PLACE
The forty-second edition of the Istanbul Film Festival, which is held regularly every year and organized by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts, was held between 7-18 April this year. For the 42nd time, the foundation, which plans to bring together cinema lovers, has again succeeded in gathering cinema lovers in international films in various categories. Qualified and award-winning films from Turkey and the world, special screenings, star actors, and master directors who are famous in Turkey and the world came together at this festival.
Brand new films that are exemplary in world cinema, cult films, master directors who have made a name for themselves with their films, and young talents following in their footsteps, 134 feature-length and 29 short-length films were screened in 12 days and 14 sections with 160 directors from 84 countries. In addition to the film screenings, the Istanbul Film Festival also hosted talks with the participation of guest directors and actors.
So what is the Istanbul Film Festival and when did it start?
Organized by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts, the film screenings began for the first time in 1982 with a 6-day film week as part of the 10th International Istanbul Festival. The following year, the screenings were extended to the duration of the festival and attracted great interest. In 1984, the screenings were separated from the International Istanbul Festival, which was also held in the summer months, and were held between 23 April and 6 May 1984 under the name of International Istanbul Cinema Days, with 44 films from 17 countries. The festival, which was held regularly in April in the following years and started to include competitive sections in 1985, developed in a short time and became internationally recognized. In early 1989, the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF) recognized the festival as a "special themed, competitive festival" and renamed it the International Istanbul Film Festival.
Istanbul Film Festival launched Meetings on the Bridge in 2006, its 25th anniversary year. Meetings on the Bridge aims to create an opportunity for filmmakers to make the first international presentation of their new feature projects and films in post-production, while also preparing the ground for co-productions. Meetings on the Bridge are organized simultaneously with the Istanbul Film Festival in April every year.
