Today, social media, which has an important place in daily life practices, is a concept that came to the fore with Web 2.0 technology. It is a new medium where individuals who are consumers become active users. With social media, individuals have ceased to be passive consumers; transformed into individuals who both produce and consume. This transformation corresponds to the term “prosumer” (producer-consumer) in the literature. In social media, users communicate with each other, give feedback, share, and gain information. Virtual communities come to the fore in this interactive environment.
Individuals can reach each other and form communities by crossing geographical borders without the time and place restrictions. These communities in the digital world are called virtual communities. In these communities, individuals can share and discuss their feelings and thoughts with each other. In short, they communicate, acquire information, and transmit information. These communities are established for various purposes. Like those who belong to a profession, a university, support a football team, like a brand.
“Community management” emerged as a new profession in the ever-expanding structure of virtual communities. Community managers are people who create, manage and analyze the needs of communities that come together within the framework of a common interest in the interactive environment of social media. It has an important role in maintaining the relations between the brand and its target audiences healthily, in the communication processes of the communities, or if they are created on behalf of a brand. It has an important function in establishing the link between the brand and its target audiences, especially in the communities created on behalf of the brands. With the developments and transformations in communication technologies, new structures, and new environments continue to emerge in the digital world. In this context, it would not be wrong to say that new professions such as community management in the field of communication may emerge in the future.
