 A New Problem of the Digital Age: Doomscrolling




One of the situations that individuals encounter in the digital age is “doom-scrolling” or “disaster scrolling” in our language. Doomscrolling; bad news addiction or the tendency to read negative news for a long time. It is a psychological condition for the reception of negative content that users encounter on various social media platforms.

Causing negative emotions in individuals; The constant consumption of news content that causes feelings of anxiety, stress, helplessness, and discomfort is expressed with the concept of room scrolling. In the digital age we live in, there is a constant flow of news in digital media. There is positive or negative content in this news. Doomscrolling is known as doomscrolling when users are always looking for negative content after being constantly exposed to such negative content. This tendency can lead to some psychological and physical problems in individuals. Individuals who constantly read bad and negative news are at risk of experiencing some psychological problems such as anxiety, fear, desire to cry, hopelessness, and startling after a while. On the other hand, physical health problems such as headaches and hormonal changes can also be experienced.

For this reason, doom-scrolling is a phenomenon that can cause some negative effects on the lives of individuals in general. It is important not to get caught up in doom-scrolling and to get rid of this unhealthy trend. It can be recommended that individuals develop an awareness of doom-scrolling, set limits for themselves while consuming digital content, stay away from bad news as much as possible, and gradually return to daily life routines.
