Titanium dioxide is a widely used chemical compound in many industrial and medical applications. It was discovered for the first time in 1971, when William Gregor, an English cleric, and mineralogist, came across an unidentified metal oxide, which makes up more than half of the sand, in the black sand of the beach in Cornwall, England. Nanoparticles in the food industry are used to improve the taste, texture, and nutritional value of foods. Particularly, nanoparticles are used in the production of durable packaging that allows moisture and gas to pass through and protects food from temperature changes, and even in smart packaging that detects and signals deterioration in the quality of food. Recently, however, there has been some debate about the health effects of titanium dioxide. Titanium dioxide is often used to give foods a white color and is also found in products such as sunscreen. However, some studies have raised concerns that this chemical compound may be harmful to human health.
Some studies have shown that micron particles of titanium dioxide, which can be inhaled or swallowed, can increase the risk of lung damage, intestinal disorders, and cancer. However, more research is needed because for now, the evidence is insufficient.
There are opinions that titanium dioxide approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is safe. However, some regulatory bodies in Europe have begun to set stricter rules on titanium dioxide content, especially in the form of nanoparticles. More research on titanium dioxide is needed. However, for now, industrial, and medical applications are continued within the limits of safe use.
