Main Factors Converting Potential Resources to Work Accidents in Underground Coal Mining Operations

In underground mining workplaces, in cases where the methane gas level rises above critical values, it is extremely important to suspend all kinds of work, to prevent various ignition sources and to take precautions against all possible dangers.

In cases where the methane gas level exceeds certain values, this is valid for cases where the methane gas level exceeds 1 percent, and when this level reaches this level, it should be ensured that no blasting is carried out in the mines. In these cases, it is necessary to stop the hard floor removal method applied in the coal extraction process. In cases where the methane gas level exceeds 1.5 percent, electrical equipment in mines should be cut off.

Situations where igniting source, oxygen and combustible gas come together form the fire triangle, and risks are avoided by preventing methane gas, which is one of its pillars. When the oxygen ratio exceeds 16 percent, an explosive atmosphere is formed as a result of the meeting of oxygen and methane gas, which forms the explosion triangle.

The ex-proof feature (flameproof structure) of electrical appliances is important in terms of preventing the ignition source, which is another pillar of the fire triangle. In the literature, 13 ignition source points have been determined and the formation of ignition sources is prevented by using electrical tools with ex-proof properties. Radios used in mining areas should have this feature. Mobile phone frequencies also pose a danger to underground mining areas and it is forbidden to take them into the mine. The use of water bags in mine sites is an important factor in preventing dust from rising and causing dust explosions as a result of explosion.
