 Istanbul's Earthquake Master Plan

While the possible consequences of an earthquake with an expected magnitude of 7 for Istanbul remain uncertain, the Istanbul Earthquake Master Plan was prepared by experts from Boğaziçi University, Middle East Technical University, Istanbul Technical University, and Yıldız Technical University.

According to the Earthquake Master Plan, risky areas in Istanbul were determined and solutions were offered for earthquake precautions.

Earthquake Risk Areas Announced

It has been stated that the buildings have moved away from their original condition because a significant part of the housing stock in the Koşuyolu and Levent Neighborhoods has changed. According to the statements in the report, there is a landslide risk, liquefaction, and flood area around 500 meters of Ayamama Stream, which meets the sea on the shores of Bakırköy.

According to the report, Kadıköy Marriage Office, Şükrü Saraçoğlu Stadium, and Kadıköy Municipality Building are located in the risk area. Again, the coastal road is also included in these areas.

It is mentioned in the report that in the central districts of Istanbul such as Şişli and Beşiktaş, there will be problems in transportation during the earthquake and much more damage will occur because the housing stock consists of adjacent houses and the roads are sloping and narrow.

Küçükçekmece, Avcılar, and Büyükçekmece Districts are also located in areas with landslide risk in an earthquake. The coastline in the north of the Marmara Sea has been identified as a region with high landslide risk.

It is not possible to reach the location of the faults

According to the Turkey Earthquake Hazard Map prepared by AFAD in 2018, experts have stated that it is not true to claim that it is possible to see from the map whether faults pass under the houses or not. Earthquake Expert Dr. Explained by Ramazan Demirtaş.
