Explosions as an Occupational Health and Safety Problem in Underground

Coal Mine Workplaces When the causes of explosions in underground coal mines, which are one of the underground mining operations, are examined, basically two main factors are emphasized. Methane gas and dust explosions, one of the main components of the natural gas we use in our homes.

Coal Mine Workplaces When the causes of explosions in underground coal mines, which are one of the underground mining operations, are examined, basically two main factors are emphasized. Methane gas and dust explosions, one of the main components of the natural gas we use in our homes.

It is known from the results of the researches originating from the USA that methane gas, which is formed during the coal production stages and is 17 cubic meters per 1 ton of coal, is known. The lower and upper explosion limits of methane (LEL and UEL values) are 5 and 15 percent (LEL 1 percent, Methane gas > 0.05 vol. It is the level at which the most appropriate explosion will be mixed with. As a result of the expansion of the heated air and the narrowness of the mine areas, the pressure created by the compression causes explosions in the form of shock waves. In dust explosions, with the heat generated, the temperature here is higher, but the pressure formed will be higher than in methane explosions, so the explosion intensity is higher.
