Disaster Education and Its Importance in OHS

Disaster and Emergency Situations are mentioned in articles 11, 12 and 30 of the Occupational Health and Safety Law No. 6331. Principles such as emergency plans, certified emergency teams and informing all employees in case of possible emergencies were emphasized.

What is Disaster?

Disasters are events that cannot be predicted when and how they will happen, causing economic, physical and environmental losses, stopping vital activities and affecting the society. It is not possible to predict losses before disaster events occur. The unpredictability of the damage to occur obliges to take precautions against disasters.

The measures to be taken against disasters in workplaces are as follows:

- Establishing disaster and emergency teams,
- Making hazard and risk assessments,
- Taking special precautions for risks that may arise from disasters,
- Preparing emergency plans,
- Ensuring the correct implementation of the prepared plans,
- Arranging emergency exits and evacuation routes,
- Performing drills regularly at least once a year are among the duties and responsibilities of workplaces.

Importance of Disaster Education

Since it directly affects human life, measures to be taken against disasters and trainings to be organized with the participation of all employees are extremely important. The main thing is the measures to be taken and the training to be given before disaster events occur. In this way, losses in disasters will be minimized and more people will be prevented from being harmed.
