In partnership with Middle East Technical University and Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality, a project was initiated to clean the Gulf of Izmit with an ecosystem-based project and to restore the health of the ecosystem.
Within the scope of the project in question, scientists from the Middle East Technical University are planning to prepare a report on the cleaning and improvement works to be done and submit it to the Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality. In line with the opinions of scientists, studies will be initiated against oxygen depletion, pollution and possible heating problems of sea water, which are in danger of forming in the Gulf of Izmit. According to the measurement results in the Gulf of Izmit, there are reports that there are oxygen depletion data in seawater and that the pollution is intense. It is aimed to start work in line with the strategy document and action plan that will be revealed as a result of the measurements and research activities.
While it is known that the sea water temperature has increased by 1.1 degrees Celsius compared to the world averages, this increase reaches 2 degrees Celsius in the Marmara Sea and the Gulf of Izmit. It is aimed to take action on the solution in a short time by investigating the causes of temperature increases above the average and the measures to be taken. It is revealed in the measurements and researches that the pollution caused by the wastes coming from the industrial and agricultural activities to the Gulf of Izmit and the wastes carried by the flow from the Marmara Sea harms the health of the ecosystem in the Gulf of Izmit. Within the scope of the project, it is planned to take long-term steps to improve the ecosystem with the suggestions to be presented by the scientists and the results of the previous workshops on this subject.
