Methane emissions from ships to be measured

The joint project called FUMES (Fugitive Methane Emissions form Ships) will use unmanned aerial vehicles and onboard techniques to measure methane emissions from ships.

In the project in question, the methane emissions of ships using LNG (liquefied natural gas) will be studied on a scale never before reached under various cruise and operational conditions, using helicopters and drones. The use of LNG for fuel in marine vehicles has increased in recent years, with a global increase of 30% between 2012 and 2018. In recent years, environmentalists and international organizations such as the World Bank have been warning about the risks of methane released into the atmosphere without being used as fuel in the engine called 'Methane Slip'.
