The project, with the short name 'Gaters', is carried out and coordinated within the scope of the EU's Horizon 2020 research program. Four partners, three from industry and one from Turkey are working on the project.

The research project budget is 6 million Euros and the project, which has been ongoing for 3 years, is carried out with 18 partners. Professor at the University of Strathclyde, Scotland. Dr. It is coordinated by Mehmet Altar and 3 Turkish researchers. Gürdesan, Çapa Denizcilik, Hidroteknik and ITU are working as 4 partners from Turkey.

'Gate Rudder' System

The three most important features of the system are that the twin rudder fans around the propeller generate additional thrust, thus providing the ship with more than 15 percent energy savings. Twin rudder fans provide an advantage to the ship, especially in low-speed port and pier maneuvers, compared to the conventional rudder. By reducing the thrust of the propeller, there is a 10-15 dB reduction in energy, cavitation, vibration, and noise level.

For the first time, the 'Gate Rudder' innovative rudder and propulsion system, which was designed and produced for a ship modification, started on the ship on April 30, 2023. It was leased for a certain period of time by Warstila company in 2020 from the Japanese patent agency, which holds the commercial license rights of the system around the world. On the other hand, project partners are excluded from this license restriction for applications up to 15 thousand DWT capacity.

It is stated that the system has opened a new era in the field of ship propulsion, with its durability features as well as many advantages such as twin rudder fans, nozzle-assisted momentum effect, and reduction of vibration and noise levels.
