While the demand for ports in the world tends to decrease, the demand in Turkey has increased and 273 million tons of cargo was handled in the second quarter of 2022 at ports, Turkey's gateway to trade.
In the second quarter data of 2022, 273 million tons of cargo was handled with a difference of 16.9 million tons, with an increase of 6.6 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. Despite the global economic situation in 2022, a growth above the global average was observed in our ports in the first 6 months of the year.
The top 10 Port Authorities, which handle the most cargo, constitute 84 percent of the total number with 230 million tons. While a decrease in load was detected in Ceyhan, Mersin, Ambarlı and Samsun Port Authorities, increases were experienced in all other Port Authorities. Load increases are noteworthy in Aliağa and Tekirdağ Port Authority, where the highest load increases are experienced, with increases of 27.3 percent and 21.5 percent, respectively.
In the second quarter of the year, there was an increase of 3.7 percent in Kocaeli Port Authority, where the highest cargo was handled. Aliağa Port Authority ranked second after Kocaeli Port Authority in terms of cargo handled. The transit container traffic at the Asyaport Port caused an increase in Tekirdağ Port Authority. The increase in Aliağa resulted from the increase in imports of liquid chemical cargoes and liquefied gas cargoes. While the rate of similar cargoes was 50 percent in Kocaeli Ports, the import share in Iskenderun Ports was 57 percent.
