Damage Compensation Discussions in Iskenderun Harbor Fire

Exporters whose goods were damaged due to the fire in the Iskenderun Port after the earthquakes dated 6 February 2023 demand compensation for their losses.

Exporters whose goods were damaged due to the fire in the Iskenderun Port after the earthquakes dated 6 February 2023 demand compensation for their losses.
Southeastern Anatolia Exporters' Associations (GAİB) President Ahmet Kileci pointed out that the products stored in the port are in large quantities and are not kept in separate places with chemicals. He made statements that if necessary precautions were taken and large quantities of products were not stored, such damages would not have occurred.
GAIB President Kileci said that the goods damaged in the fire after the earthquake are a serious problem in terms of production and foreign trade and that there are problems in covering the losses of exporters. It was stated that the products delivered to the port were under the responsibility of the port from the moment of delivery and that the relevant compensation procedures should be carried out by the port.
In the said case, it was stated in the statements made by GAİB President Ahmet Kileci that the insurance coverage of the goods of foreign trade companies is valid until they are brought to the port and that the responsibility of the port operator is within the port, therefore, the losses of the exporters are covered and the trade is expected to return to the past urgently.
Iskenderun Port Management officials, on the other hand, stated that the fire after the earthquake should be handled within the scope of natural disasters, and therefore, the expectation of the port to cover the damages of the exporters due to the fire is both legally and commercially wrong. In this context, he explains that exporters should have insured their goods for such cases.
