 Anti-Leak Support Call from IMO

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) called on the member states to add equipment against the possibility of leakage of the Safer oil tanker, which has been anchored off the coast of Hudayde for 7 years and announced that it may cause a major environmental disaster in the Red Sea.

In the statement made by IMO, it was stated that in case of a possible leak, expert support was provided in preparation and response to the spill in accordance with the emergency plans. In the statement, which stated that Yemen is lacking in equipment against a possible leak and intervention, it called on its members to contribute equipment to contribute to the work to be carried out under the leadership of the United Nations (UN). It has been announced that a possible oil spill will cause an environmental disaster in a large area in the Red Sea. On the other hand, it was pointed out that the oil spill is likely to affect nearby countries such as Djibouti, Eritrea and Saudi Arabia.
The danger of leakage of 1.1 million barrels of oil from the Safer oil tanker off the coast of Hudeyde in the Red Sea has been a risk since 2015. The UN has long warned that a potential leak could create four times as many leaks as the Exxon Valdez disaster in 1989. On April 8, a "time bomb" warning was issued for the Safer oil tanker by the UN and it was announced that the cost of repairing the spill could cost $20 billion. The Yemeni government has announced that it has received sufficient commitment by the UN to save the oil tanker that may cause a spill. It was announced by the UN on 16 November 2022 that the unloading of the tanker would begin at the beginning of 2023.
