The World's Fifth Highest Dam in Its Class, Yusufeli was put into service
It is very important for our country to increase the use of renewable energy sources. Because the decrease in foreign dependency and the increase in diversity are a very important geopolitical necessity for today. In this context, the Yusufeli Dam and the Hydroelectric Power Plant connected to the dam, whose construction was completed within the borders of Artvin, were opened.
Yusufeli Dam, which is quite high with 275 meters and attracts attention with its height and is the 5th highest dam in its class in the world with this height, is of great importance in this sense.
Yusufeli Dam will produce approximately 1.9 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. This facility is planned to store 2 billion 130 million cubic meters of water.
The dam, which was started to be built in 2013, was completed after a construction period of about 10 years. The dam, which is in the double curvature concrete arch class, has achieved the title of the highest dam in Turkey.
Considering the data shared by the construction company, the dam with an installed power of approximately 558 megawatts (MW) meets 2% of the hydroelectric capacity of our country. The dam, which has the capacity to meet the electricity needs of approximately 2.5 million people, is planned to contribute 5 billion liras to the economy.
Of course, there were some negative situations due to the dam construction. The settlement of Yusufeli district was completely moved to another region. Thus, the area where the settlement of the district was located was completely submerged. Again, many trees in the area would have been flooded. However, as a precaution, these trees were removed and moved to new treeless lands.
