However, the company is also one of the well-known engine manufacturers in the world. The company, which has serious experience in engines, wants to use this knowledge for other purposes. With its experience and high knowledge capacity, the company has rolled up its sleeves to build a small nuclear reactor.
The nuclear reactor developed by the company is designed for use in spacecraft and lunar bases.
The company revealed the small nuclear reactor they developed in a tweet a short time ago. One of the top priorities for Micro Reactor is the safety of the reactor. The company states that it has equipped the uranium parts in the reactor with a very special containment system with multiple protective layers to ensure that they are protected in extreme conditions.
While nuclear power has been used for some space missions until now, for obvious reasons, nuclear power has not been used in crewed missions until now.
It is stated that nuclear energy may be less costly and in a shorter time compared to currently used rockets.
The US Department of Defense has been in contact with private companies that have been developing nuclear propulsion systems for the past few years.
With the Micro Reactor it produces, Rolls-Royce wants it to be used not only in spacecraft but also in Moon base missions. It has provided millions of dollars last year to manufacture and design nuclear power plants for the US Department of Defense and NASA Moon facilities.
