Green area measure against drought; 5 tons of savings is targeted

Turkey is facing the threat of drought. State Hydraulic Works announced that there is a 3-month resource in the reserves that meet the water needs of the megacity Istanbul. One of the measures taken against the danger is the savings in green field irrigation. With the measures developed by Istanbul Gelişim University academicians, a saving of 5 tons is aimed at the end of the project every season.

Green area measure against drought; 5 tons of savings is targeted
Experts state that Turkey has experienced the most severe drought in the last 10 years. However, drought measures and strategies to be taken are of vital importance. Setting off from this responsibility, academics aim to save water with the measures they have developed. Architect Mahmut Sevgi, Deputy Head of Support Services at Istanbul Gelişim University, said, “Drought has become a big problem for both our country and the world. We wanted to be a solution to this problem with savings. We have taken various measures to save on the green area in the university garden," he said.
“WE REDUCED IRRIGATION FROM 3 TO 1 A WEEK”
Expressing that they have built embankments in the area where the landslide has occurred, Architect Mahmut Sevgi said, “We put natural stones on them together with the dams. The embankments prevented landslides and waste of water. We reduced the application that we did 3 days a week to one day a week. This was to prevent serious water loss for us. The natural stones on it preserved the moisture of the soil," he said.
“THIS PLANTS CAN BE PREFERRED”
Emphasizing that the choice of plants is also very important in saving, Mahmut Sevgi said, “Especially in these days when there is a danger of drought, it is necessary to choose plants that are resistant to water. It is important to use plants that can stay green for four seasons and are resistant to wind and air pollution. Some plants, such as the lily, also absorb the carbon emissions of vehicles. Fruit trees do not require a lot of water. These trees can be used for saving purposes. Leyland species can be preferred in hobby gardens. It is a very resistant plant in all respects.”
