The decrease in international transportation, which is considered as one of the important indicators of exports, started to increase. Some of the freight connections are postponed to future dates, while others are cancelled. In relation to the decrease in the loadings of the containers, the decreases in the freight also continue. There is also a decrease in the number of trucks passing through the border gates.
With Europe in the foreground, the impact of the contraction in the global economy on Turkey's export-oriented activities is also increasing. The number of loading activities of international transportation, which is one of the important indicators of exports, is also decreasing and cancellations are occurring. While the decreases in freight rates due to decreasing demands continue, this situation frightens the sector representatives. The concern that these decreases might increase further, especially in the later periods of winter, and the possible contractions in the business volume became a cause of concern for the representatives of the sector.
Cihan Özkal, a member of the board of directors of UTIKAD and also the Chairman of the Marine Working Group, made the following statements regarding the contractions in the European and US economies: ‘’ We have some customers in our sector that they are very planned. They work on a schedule, on a regular basis, and this is how they ship. Those customers began to request delays in their shipments. For example, we have a customer operating in the textile industry in the USA. It regularly loads 20 40' containers every month. For the first time in all, he asked us to postpone. He asked us to postpone the installation, which will take place in October, to December. In this case, it means that the delivery will take place in mid-January. He did not cancel his order, but asked for a serious delay. It is not normal for a textile shipment to be delayed this long before Christmas. On the European side, there are cancellations as well as order delays. There is a tendency to drop, delay, or keep it in stock. We are worried about how the next winter will go. In particular, there are delays, drops and cancellations of orders by Europe. This is a huge danger for us. Because Europe is a very important market for us’’.
