Exodus to the EU Decreased By 30 Percent As Trucks Arrived to Help

The wounds of the Kahramanmaraş earthquake, one of the biggest disasters Turkey has experienced, in which approximately forty-five thousand people lost their lives, which is expressed as the disaster of the century, are still being tried to be healed. For this purpose, the leading companies in the logistics sector are trying to deliver their aid to the earthquake region. Hundreds of companies sent their trucks to support the region. Especially for the first 10 days, UND sent more than 2,500 trucks and UTIKAD more than 500 trucks to the earthquake zone. At the same time, transportation efforts by air, sea, and rail also gained momentum and increased.

Crisis desks were created under the coordination of AFAD together with the relevant ministry officials, leading UND and UTIKAD, as well as the Non-Governmental Organizations included in the logistics sector. Almost 24/7 uninterrupted work continued at these crisis desks to provide logistic support to deliver aid materials to the earthquake zone. Ayşem Ulusoy, the President of UTIKAD, the Association of International Forwarding and Logistics Service Providers, underlined that the logistics sector took part in the works as a single heart towards the earthquake process and made the following evaluations: ‘’ The companies belonging to us in the logistics sector have high mobility due to the experience they have gained so far, and at the same time have the power to take action quickly. For this reason, we have the potential to quickly bond with each other. This is a pretty cool thing. In this way, we witnessed our power there. We have also seen to what extent the logistics industry can contribute to this issue’’.

The logistics sector, which works almost as one heart towards the earthquake, sent over three thousand trucks to the earthquake zone in the first 10 days. This situation resulted in a 30% decrease in exits from the border gates to the EU, with the transportation activities that should be carried out regarding exports being taken into the second plan.
