DAMAGE TO THE RAILS AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE AFFECTED MINING LOGISTICS NEGATIVELY

Some railway tracks in the region were damaged due to the earthquake. Unfortunately, this situation also affected the operation of logistics activities. Businesses started to lose business, especially abroad, as they could not unload the export loads they had to unload to the port.

The damage to some important railway lines as a result of the earthquake created great problems in railway logistics, especially in mining exports. After the events, even half of the export loads that the miners have to unload to the port cannot be carried out by the railway companies. Due to this reason, cancellations began to occur for orders from abroad.

The destruction of railway lines due to the earthquake, which is expressed as the disaster of the century, has put both logistics and export companies in serious trouble. For this reason, logistics companies have significant problems in realizing the demands for incoming transportation. Due to the situation in question, export companies dealing with mining received the biggest blow. The mining factories in the east of our country cannot unload their export loads to the port, so they started to lose their jobs abroad. Onur Küçükakdere, President of the Railway Transport Association (DTD), who made an interview with the Economy newspaper on this subject, emphasized that the repair activities on the roads should be carried out faster in order to avoid further loss in exports, and made the following statements: ‘’ Due to the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquake that took place on February 6 and affected 11 provinces, the tunnel between Kapıdere and Gölbaşı on the İzmir road completely collapsed. Those using the railway had to extend the route as an alternative route and they use the Tohma Bridge around Malatya. However, this bridge is also working at half capacity due to the damage. After the earthquake, only 1,500 tons can pass through this bridge, where an average of 3,000 tons of load passes in one day. The authorities do not expect the tunnel to be repaired earlier than 6 months but demand that at least the non-heavy damage to the Tohma Bridge, which is an alternative route, is urgently removed and brought to full capacity. Since no tender has been held for the repair activities, the damage that has occurred on the bridge for more than three months cannot be repaired’’.
