"The Gerontological Care Training" is Completed: Every Aspect of Holistic and Professional Care for Elderly Individuals Explored

The demographic changes both in our country and globally have increased the importance of research, projects, and scientific fields related to the elderly for various institutions and stakeholders. In response to this growing need, the Continuous Education Application and Research Center for home care personnel for the elderly, aimed to be employed by Beylikdüzü Municipality, and requested by Istanbul Gelişim University Faculty of Health Sciences, organized the "Gerontological Care Training" from December 4 to December 12, 2023.

The "Gerontological Care Training" typically signifies the successful completion of an education program that encompasses effective caregiving skills for elderly individuals. Such training aims to equip professionals in the health and social service sectors with the necessary knowledge, skills, and understanding to provide appropriate and high-quality care for the elderly.

Participants in the training program acquired fundamental knowledge about the physical, emotional, and social needs of elderly individuals. They developed skills in assessing the health conditions of the elderly, recognizing and monitoring specific health issues, and establishing effective communication, emotional support, and understanding of the needs of elderly individuals. The participants also gained competencies in developing empathy towards the elderly, respecting individual rights, demonstrating cultural sensitivity, ensuring safety in elderly care, reducing fall risks, and acquiring emergency intervention skills. Practical skills were acquired in bedside care, mobility support, nutrition, hygiene, and specialized care for conditions like Alzheimer's and dementia.

The training was conducted by the academic staff of Istanbul Gelişim University Faculty of Health Sciences, including Dr. Fatma Sıla AYAN from the Gerontology Department, Dr. Bahar Nur KANBUR AKDOĞAN from the Nursing Department, and Research Assistants Ayşem Ecem ÖZDEMİR and Öznur KAYA SAĞLAM from the Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Department. The training took place in classrooms provided by the municipality. Following the 45-hour training, a theoretical exam was administered, and certificates were awarded to participants based on their exam performance. These certificates indicate the successful completion of the "Gerontological Care Training" program, showcasing the acquisition of crucial skills. Additionally, these certificates can serve as a significant advantage in future job applications and career advancement for the participants.

Istanbul Gelişim University continues to provide education aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, aiming to meet societal needs and contribute to these goals.
