December 3rd is an international celebration day that many governments around the world hold awareness programs, designated as the 'International Day of People with Disabilities' by the United Nations in 1992. Organized by the Ministry of Justice on the occasion of the 3 December International Day of People with Disabilities, the 'Justice without Barriers Workshop' was held in Ankara on 1 December 2022.
Minister of Justice Bekir Bozdag, who made a speech at the workshop, touched upon the work done on the disabled, especially the amendment made in Article 10 of the Constitution. Minister Bozdag also stated that the expressions in the laws that can hurt the disabled have been replaced with legal concepts. Referring to article 122 of the Turkish Penal Code, Bozdağ also reminded that discrimination due to disability is regulated as a crime that requires a prison sentence of 1 to 3 years.
Bozdağ added that arrangements were made to facilitate the access of disabled citizens to the courthouse buildings, and the physical conditions were improved considering the disabled. Minister Bozdag, who later touched upon a project of the Ministry of Justice, emphasized that a word of legal terms has been prepared for our disabled citizens in order to assist them in the necessary judicial process, and that the dictionary of legal terms prepared in sign language will be offered to the service of our disabled citizens. Lastly, Minister Bozdağ stated that sensitive studies are carried out for the employment of the disabled within the Ministry of Justice and that the rate of disabled people in employment is over 4 percent.
