The cistern, built by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I (527-565), has a rectangular shape with a length of 140 meters and a width of 70 meters. There are 336 columns with a height of 9 meters in the basilica, which has a water storage capacity of approximately 100 thousand tons. During the restoration of the cistern, old tensioners were replaced with stainless steel to increase earthquake resistance. In addition, the walking paths were renewed and a walking path was built where the cistern can be experienced more deeply.
