 Post-Disaster Sustainable Furniture Virtual Exhibition

In order to draw attention to the housing problem that emerged after the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes that took place on February 6, 2023 in our country, the "Post-Disaster Sustainable Furniture Workshop" event was held with the students of the Interior Design Program of our school.

The most basic need that emerged after the earthquake was the issue of shelter. Furniture suitable for flexible and modular use has become important for people living in tents and containers. In this context, a different perspective was brought to the subject with the concept of sustainability together with the Interior Design students.

The event was held at Istanbul Gelişim University K Block between 10 -12 May 2023. On the first day of the workshop, the event started by making presentations on the subject by our program instructors.

The first presentation with the title of “The Concept of Post-Disaster Shelter and Factors Effective in Design” was made by Interior Design Program Head Lecturer Selin Rüya ÇAKIR. Another lecturer of the program, Ece CANTEMİR, conveyed the subject of “Flexibility in Furniture” to the students. Then, lecturer Gözde İLERİ gave their presentations on “Sustainable Materials”, lecturer Hülya ALGUR MARŞOĞLU “Sustainable Furniture” and lecturer Duygu ERSOY HOCAMOĞLU on “Sustainable Furniture Examples”.

After the presentations, the students started their work by dividing into groups. For three days, they worked on the subject and exchanged ideas with our teachers.

Rational solutions emerged as a result of the devoted efforts of our students and teachers. Functional furniture designs were made in terms of both sustainability and flexibility. In addition to furniture, it is possible to see designs suitable for the common use of people in the studies.

A virtual exhibition has been created so that the resulting products can be visited by everyone. The exhibition opening was held on 20 June 2023. We would like to thank our students and program teachers for their devoted work during the workshop and exhibition. Anyone who wishes can visit our exhibition from the link below.
