 Managing Construction and Demolition Waste

Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) is defined as a secondary source of raw materials made up of drywall, roofing, wood, plastic (such as PVC, and insulation), masonry (inert materials such as brick, concrete, and rock), and metals.
The reuse and recycling of CDW materials and structures in building renovation and energy-efficient prefabricated elements for structures have been explored for years.
Starting from the concepts of Reuse, Recycling, Prefabrication, and Renewal (REuse, REcycling, pREfabricated, REfurbishment), a project was launched across the European Union. The aim of the project named RE-4; Promoting new technological solutions for the design and advancement of structural and non-structural prefabricated elements housing highly recycled building materials and structures that have been partially or completely reused after the structures have been demolished.
750 million tons of construction and demolition waste generated annually constitute 25-30% of all EU waste. The EU aims to keep wood, metal, glass, and concrete materials out of landfills by giving them a new life. To support this goal, at least 70% of the weight of non-hazardous construction and post-demolition wastes of EU member states are required to be reused or recycled by recycling.
The RE4 project demonstrates that materials and structures made from construction demolition waste can effectively reintroduce concrete and wood components with a 50-85% replacement rate.
Five new concrete materials are within the scope of the project; Four new components, namely tiles, blocks, insulation panels, and wood, have been developed in addition to four new prefabricated elements.
