Heating and Cooling Provided with Water-filled Windows Using Sunlight

“Water-Filled Glass”, a British venture company, has developed water-filled glass sheets that take advantage of sunlight. The upgraded product powers a “crazy” energy-efficient heating and cooling system. Founded by Loughborough University Architecture Lecturer Matyas Gutai and his colleagues Daniel Schinagl and Abolfazl Ganji Kheybari in 2020, the goal of Water-Filled Glass (WFG) is to use patented technology by making buildings that use heavy glass sustainable.

In this developed window system, there is a thin layer of water between the glass plates that absorbs the heat from the sun's rays and other radiation. The heated water is collected at low pressure to the colder parts of the building from the underfloor system or thermal storage through closed pipes. The water-filled glass that absorbs the thermal energy in this way also limits the amount of heat entering the building through the windows, thus reducing the need for air conditioning in hot weather periods.

Gutai said it was a crazy idea to put water between the window panes, but it was effective in reducing the energy and carbon emissions of buildings. He added that glass, which is used effectively in this system in heating and cooling, is found everywhere and is a material used in every building.

Although the “Water-Filled Glass” system varies depending on the climate in which the building is located and the window-wall ratio in the building, it is predicted that the energy consumption for heating-cooling can be reduced by 25% compared to the standard window used in the buildings. The first prototype structures consisted of two structures, Water House 1.0 and Water House 2.0, built as a small cabin in Hungary and a pavilion at Feng Chia University in Taiwan.
