A Traditional Brick House Restored With Natural Materials

French office Anatomies D'Architecture has recently completed the restoration of a traditional 83m2 brick house in Sap-En-Auge, in the Normandy region.

Some of Anatomies D'Architecture's ambitious construction goals were to use 0% concrete, 0% plastic and 100% natural materials. In addition, every material used in the “Le Costil” project was supplied from an area with a radius of 100 km.

During the two-year construction period, the architects, with the support of local and traditional craftsmen of Normandy, implemented it with ancestral methods and regional solidarity.

Anatomies D'Architecture has reinterpreted "the way we build houses" by setting a goal for itself. Instead of building an independent structure, his goal was to create a project of his own region, taking into account the habitat, climate, geography, history, construction techniques and local materials.

The first step they took to build Le Costil; Robinia logs on the pile foundation, Douglas wood for the wooden frame of the structure, recycled cork to provide rotproof insulation, hemp to provide biobased insulation, padding from local virgin earth, bioclimatic insulation obtained from chestnut wood slats. In addition to these, straw, cow dung, flint and a nearby hazelnut tree formed the source.
Anatomies D'Architecture used the Calade technique, which does not need mortar and adhesive to compile the material offered by the region, but to provide watertightness on the floor. Some of the terracotta bricks originally found in the building were redesigned to create a terrace using this technique.

After months of joint effort, the team was able to move, scrape and compact 1,100 bricks, 800 floor tiles and 400 reused tiles. The project was completed in two years by constantly trying to find alternative and local solutions to traditional buildings.
