A Climate Sensitive Building "Rambla Climate House"

To restore its drought-resistant ecology in Spain's Murcia region, Spanish architects Andrés Jacques and Miguel Mesa del Castillo built a climate-sensitive residence. Rambla Climate House, which sets an example for sustainable architecture, rises on columns in the wild land where it is located. Thus, it preserves the soil moisture of the site and revitalizes the biodiversity. Its fissured topography is called “ramblas” in Spanish, and the sustainable architectural project modeled on these valleys was designed by Mesa del Castillo for her brother and family.

For this project, architects were worked with Soil Expert María Martínez Mena and Ecologists Paz Parrondo Celdrán and Rubén Vives. In order to reverse the damage caused by urbanization, a design that uses high and low technology approaches has been put forward. In the design of the building, the team added a smart and environmentally friendly irrigation system. This irrigation system uses wastewater to deliver proper soil moisture level based on sensor data and weather forecasts.

The unusual landscape environment of the building includes a wide biodiversity. Except for the facade of the building facing the garden, all the walls were covered with galvanization. In the part where the glass façade is, the marble balcony behind the façade provides a passively cooled sitting area. The hot water supply of the house is obtained from the solar energy coil. Passive systems used in sustainable architecture are also used in this building. The rooms of the house are arranged in rows so that the garden can be seen from all areas. The living areas are located at one end of the building and three bedrooms at the other. The striking apple green hue, determined to be in harmony with the landscape, creates the exterior and interior color of the residence.

“Rambla Climate House”, an example of sustainable architecture, which received very positive reactions, continues to be a trend since the day it was completed.
