Obligation to Specify Salary Information in Job Postings

Recently, the New York City Council has made it mandatory for companies to specify salary information in their job postings, and this practice has caused different interpretations in the business world all over the world. The obligation to specify salary information has become a legal requirement for companies with four or more employees in their full-time employee announcements. While it is evaluated that the law intends to prevent discriminatory practices based on language, religion, gender and ethnic origin, salary information is not specified in job postings in many countries of the world.

For many job seekers today, the salary they will receive is one of the main reasons for their decision. The second factor that affects employees' choice of company is the image of the workplace. When it becomes a requirement for all companies to specify salary information in job postings, candidates will have learned from the beginning the amount of salary they can receive for the job they want to apply for. It can be said that this can help develop “equal pay for equal work” policies in the workplace. In the long run, it can be seen as a positive development for the labor market. Although the salary expectation is asked in the first interview or in the preliminary interview, the lost time that will be spent by both the candidate and the employer may have been prevented until it reaches that stage.
By specifying salary information in job postings, candidates can filter companies that pay more than a certain amount on their job search portal. In the same way, employers can reach the candidate in a more accurate rate in a shorter time by filtering the expectations of the candidates based on wages.
Specifying salary information as a disadvantage may directly affect the competitive conditions of companies. In some sectors, knowing the profit of the person providing that service on the customer side may have different results. Employees for almost every position may want to compare the salary information of their positions in different companies by showing precedent. However, expectations and workload may be different for the same position in different companies. On the other hand, people who have been employed at different times may receive different wages over time due to different wage increases or career paths.
If companies write the salary information for the position in the advertisement, it may be necessary to follow a transparent wage policy throughout the company. Thus, everyone in the company will be able to directly know everyone's earnings. This can cause problems in the subordinate relationship.
