Modernization Request in the Customs Union Agreement

Ali Kopuz, Chairman of the Istanbul Commodity Exchange (İSTİB), stated that the Customs Union agreement covers industrial and processed agricultural products between Turkey and the European Union, and that there is a quota for agricultural products. After the signing of the agreement, it was said that the world has changed in international trade and now the Customs Union needs to be modernized.
It was stated that the agricultural quotas also harmed Turkey and the European Union, so that the review of the quotas will increase Turkey's exports and enable the European Union countries to provide food at affordable prices.
Ali Kopuz drew attention to the drought problem experienced in Europe in the last period and stated that while the drought caused the decrease in olive production in Europe, Turkey broke the record in olive production and in this case, Europe's olive deficit created an opportunity for Turkey's exports to these countries.
However, he stated that the fact that the pass-through between both parties was prevented by quotas created a situation to the detriment of both Europe and Turkey.
It was stated that the world has changed a lot after the agreement with the European Union, and therefore some quotas should be updated more dynamically and in line with the needs of the day. It was stated that the export potential could not be reached due to quotas in many products in the agricultural sector, where Turkey is advantageous, and this situation could be corrected by free trade agreements that will pave the way for agriculture or by arranging the quotas according to the needs of the day.
With the removal of trade barriers between markets that are very close to each other, Europe will be able to evaluate Turkey's production potential in critical products.
