Imitation is the representation of foodstuffs and substances and materials in contact with food as having properties that they do not have in terms of shape, composition, and qualities. Fraud defines the production of foodstuffs and substances and materials in contact with food in violation of the legislation or permitted specifications.
Selling margarine as butter and selling cow cheese as goat cheese can be exemplified for imitation. Adding sugar to honey, high amount of HMF in molasses, mixing chicken meat into beef sausage can be given as examples for fraud.
In the inspections carried out by the Ministry, a fine from 55 thousand liras to 555 thousand liras is given in the first case of imitation / fraud. In the second case of imitation / fraud, double the penalty will be applied. If the same violation is committed for the third time, a prison sentence will be imposed.
