The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has announced that it foresees a full and sustainable recovery and an increase in air passenger demand in 2023. According to the organization, air passenger demand in 2023 will be about 3 percent higher than in 2019. Using advanced big data, ICAO predicts that by 2023, air passenger demand on most routes will quickly reach pre-pandemic levels in the first quarter. According to 2019 figures, an annual increase of about 3 percent is predicted. Salvatore Sciacchitano, President of the ICAO Council, said: "Ensuring a safe, secure and sustainable improvement of aviation services is key to re-establishing aviation as a catalyst for sustainability at the local, national and global levels, and is ultimately necessary for countries to recover from wider impacts.
Juan Carlos Salazar, ICAO Secretary General, said: “The air passenger forecasts released today by ICAO give strong support to the recovery in 2022, as previously predicted by the ICAO statistical analysis. Through ICAO, governments have agreed on a goal of zero accidents by 2030 and zero carbon emissions by 2050 and continue to play a key role in both leading continued progress and prioritizing initiatives to support ICAO implementation." According to an ICAO statement, the number of passengers carried in 2022 is predicted to increase by 47 percent compared to 2021, while the number of passenger kilometers (RPC) sold during the same period is estimated to have increased by about 70 percent, mainly due to the rapid recovery.
