Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, announced that it plans to operate 10 flights a week from Abu Dhabi to Istanbul. Etihad Airways started flights to Istanbul in June 2009. Istanbul is one of the most popular destinations for UAE residents looking for a short break. Istanbul's location makes it a crucible of cultures influenced by both the East and the West for centuries. Istanbul flights strengthened the developing commercial relations between the two countries. On January 17, 2021, Etihad Airways resumed passenger flights from Abu Dhabi to Istanbul (AUH-IST). The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner with Business and Economy cabins is served twice a week on the first flight. Etihad said it will gradually restore more destinations to its global network after a hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
