 What is Sustainable Fashion?

“Sustainability” is one of the important issues in the ready-made clothing industry these days, where environmental awareness is increasing.

People's search for change and diversity, and the motivation to express themselves and their social identity, creates a fast production-consumption cycle through fast fashion. In the face of this rapid production and consumption, nature is rapidly depleted and becomes unable to renew itself. Global climate changes, the depletion of resources, the increase in waste generation, and environmental pollution require taking precautions against problems that may occur in the future. As a result of the increase in the movements for the protection of the environment, the concepts such as ecological product, sustainability, recycling, and reuse that do not harm the environment and human health, constitute the starting point of fashion designers and affect the fashion industry. It is desired to reduce the environmental damage caused by rapid consumption and waste generation caused by recycling and sustainability and fast fashion. Sustainable fashion has developed against fast fashion. It is an approach that aims to protect natural resources, reduce waste generation and protect the ecological balance. Ready-to-wear companies and designers create their collections within the scope of sustainable fashion by using circular products and developing product services and process designs based on a business model that includes circular solutions. In this sense, the use of recyclable natural-containing fabrics, redesigning recyclable clothes, using dyestuffs that do not contain toxic substances, and creating wearable clothing designs that will not go out of fashion are among the topics that ready-made clothing companies consider within the scope of sustainable fashion while creating their collections.
