 Political Influences in Fashion

Fashion, which is a social phenomenon that takes its source from society, reflects society and designers often include political changes in their collections.

Katherina Hemnett, who made the first slogan t-shirt in the 1980s gave anti-war statements and sociopolitical messages in large, bold, black letters. Designer Jean Charles de Castelbajac used a sizable painting of America's first African-American president, Barack Obama, in his collection to reflect changes in American society. André Courrèges brought the 'Space Race' craze of the 1960s into fashion by preparing a collection called 'Moon Girl' in 1964. Alexander McQueen also made references to subjects such as war and religion from time to time.
