National 6G Research Facility to Open at Sheffield University

A research facility will be set up at the University of Sheffield, aiming to help the UK become the world leader in 6G mobile phone technology.

A research facility will be set up at the University of Sheffield, aiming to help the UK become the world leader in 6G mobile phone technology.

The new national center will bring together academics and industry to support innovation in 6G, which experts say can be 100 times faster than 5G. Professor Timothy O'Farrell from the University said this will play a big role in the UK's 6G capabilities. The facility was funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the main body for engineering and physical science research in the UK.

EPSRC is managed by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), the agency responsible for distributing grants for university research. Prof O'Farrell, who will lead the facility, said 6G is next-generation telecommunications technology and has quickly become a strategically important area for research and development. "If the UK is to remain a global leader in telecommunications, then we need specialist equipment that our academics and industrial partners can use to innovate and develop next-generation 6G technologies."

The new national center will be in the University's Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering. The facility is set up to enable research into many aspects of 6G radio systems, including candidate waveforms, transmitter and receiver circuits, digital acquisition and signal processing, antenna arrays and over-the-air (OTA) propagation measurements. Known as the UKRI National 6G Radio Systems Facility, the facility is expected to be operational by January next year.
