Keban Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant was built on the Euphrates River for the generation of electricity between 1965 and 1975. The body volume of the Keban dam is 16,679,000 m³, its height is 210 meters, the lake volume is 31,000 hm³, and the lake area is 675 km². Keban dam lake is the second largest artificial lake and the fourth largest lake in Turkey. The length of the lake is 125 kilometers.
It is one of Turkey's first giant investments in terms of energy. The first 4 turbines of the dam, which started to be built in 1965, were commissioned in 1974 and the other 4 turbines were commissioned in 1981. The total installed power of the dam is 1330 MWe, with an annual energy production capacity of 6600 GWh and an average annual electricity production of 5852 GWh. Today, approximately 12 percent of Turkey's electricity needs are provided by dams and Keban Dam has an important place in this 12 percent segment.
Keban Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant, which was officially opened on September 9, 1974, has taken a very important place in Turkey's efforts to get rid of foreign dependency in energy. Continuing to operate in its 44th year, our hydroelectric power plant is a Turkish engineering achievement that has gained a critical place in breaking down prejudices against many innovations in the field of energy and in its internal resource orientation.
We celebrate the 44th Anniversary of our Keban Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant and hope that Turkey will progress in an open manner to the innovations required by our age in the field of energy.
