Experts Including Elon Musk Want Artificial Intelligence Education to be Stopped

Key figures in AI want the training of powerful AI systems to be suspended for fear of a threat to humanity. They signed an open letter of warning against potential risks and say the race to develop AI systems is getting out of hand. Twitter chief Elon Musk is among those who want artificial intelligence training above a certain capacity to be stopped for at least six months. Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and some researchers at DeepMind also signed on.

The letter from the Future of Life Institute, signed by the illuminators, requests a temporary halt to development at this level and warns of the risks posed by more advanced systems in the future. AI systems with human-competitive intelligence can pose profound risks to society and humanity, he says. The Future of Life Institute is a nonprofit organization that says its mission is "to bring transformative technologies away from extreme, large-scale risks and benefit life."
Musk, the owner of Twitter and CEO of the auto company Tesla, contributes as an outside consultant. The letter says advanced AI must be carefully developed, but instead, in recent months, we've seen AI labs engage in an out-of-control race to develop and deploy digital minds that are more powerful than anyone else. This indicates the development of intelligence that can understand, predict, or reliably control. However, experts warn that artificial intelligence can fill information channels with false information and replace jobs with automation.
