According to Gates, when cars become truly driverless, they will be as revolutionary as the personal computer. Bill Gates recently got into an autonomous vehicle developed by Wayve, a UK startup, and was blown away by his experience. In his blog post, he stated that the vehicle's performance in autonomous driving is "fantastic", although it does require control from time to time. Today, personal vehicles are not yet self-driving, but some companies have started offering autonomous taxi services in certain cities. Services like GM's Cruise and Alphabet's Waymo operate in specific areas of cities using detailed maps and programming. On the other hand, Wayve aims to develop an AI-powered vehicle that can learn to drive anywhere, like Tesla, so that the vehicles can be used anywhere, including places they have never been to before. Bill Gates believes that autonomous vehicles will have a chance to become widespread in areas such as long-distance transportation and logistics. He predicts that with the spread of autonomous vehicles, they will be cheaper than normal vehicles. Gates thinks that these vehicles will play a critical role for people who are too old or disabled to drive while saving people time. However, he predicts that it may take decades for the technology to become widespread.
